Believe it or not, the hottest curry ever made didn’t come from India or Bangladesh. It came from Grantham. ‘The Widower’ was made with 20 infinity chillies, famed for their hotness. Only one person has ever managed to stomach it. It took an hour for this hero to finish the curry, 10 minutes of which he spent hallucinating from endorphin rush.
In honour of this nameless hero, I’m putting together a list of the best curry houses in Liverpool. Enjoy!
East Z East
Kings Dock, Keel Wharf, Liverpool L3 4BX
This is Bollywood. Water fountain walls, neon, you name it but every curry fan worth their salt knows that it’s all about the food. Specifically, the synergies of the spices, the thickness of the sauce and cuts of meat.
East Z East appreciate that you don’t just use chillies for heat. If handled and prepared correctly, chillies add nuance and subtleties to curry that can distinguish them from the rest.
The owners have been in business since 1976 and all their chefs are trained in house. They’ve all been trained in Desi Kashmiri cooking. You’ll get a homely and warm feel from East Z East on Albert Dock.
They even have their own blog where they discuss all things curry. A curry house after my own heart!

Mowgli Street Food
69 Bold Street, Liverpool L1 4EZ
Nisha Katona had a dream. To channel her love of the Jungle Book into her love of food. Maybe. What she actually had in her mind was to create a pure, authentic Indian home and street cooking experience. The result? Mowgli Street Food.
Nisha, a barista for 20 years, put down her Tampa and picked up her Tava. And the world is better of for it.
What you’ll find here is what you’ll find on the table of the typical Indian family. As a result, meat is almost a no show. Instead, the menu would appear almost vegan, which is how curry was traditionally when meat was expensive and rare.
Expect an explosion of intense Indian culture. The wide and playful colour palette that celebrates life and beauty. As a result, you won’t find a hushed, quiet vibe. You’ll find a blitzkrieg of spices, cocktails and style.
Rumi by Bukhara
46-48 Mount Pleasant, Liverpool L3 5SD
Bringing something new to the table, Rumi offers a café experience by day and curry house by night. During the day you can treat yourself to delicious gourmet burgers and other café staples.
In the evening, you’ll find all your favourite curries.
The interior is modern, and contemporary with lashing of purple leather.
After a lovely Balti, I always found myself wishing after a spot of dessert. Luckily, Rumi by Bukhara has this covered. They offer homemade gelato and waffles for those with a sweet tooth.
If you love a curry and want to enjoy one without breaking the bank, you can here.
