Wanting some restaurant inspiration? Spotted a restaurant you fancy but not sure whether to take the plunge? In a completely new city and wanting to use your time wisely? TripAdvisor is your best friend. Collating reviews from real people, the key to TripAdvisor's success is it's informality. It's like receiving recommendations from not one source, but thousands!

One of the marks of a great restaurant is their TripAdvisor ranking. As it's in the hands of the people that have dined there, it's not always the restaurants you would expect dominating the top spots. Of course, the more premium venues tend to score very highly, but some unexpected cheaper eats often rank well. These are restaurants where people recognise excellent food at great value.

It should always be taken with a pinch of salt what other people define as a great restaurant, but if used wisely, TripAdvisor can offer some great pointers when faced with a tidal wave of choice. There are a lot of factors that go into rating a restaurant, food, service, ambiance, but of course, it is all subjective. This guide intends to examine the top TripAdvisor restaurants in Manchester currently and understand why reviewers have scored them so highly.

1. Restaurant MCR

The current number 1 restaurant in Manchester our of 1,929 different eateries! Restaurant MCR opened in December 2018 and is highly regarded as a Manchester institution. With Restaurant MCR, Aiden has reinvented the dining experience with a more personal touch in familiar surroundings. The 6 and 12 course tasting menus draw on highlights from his career, seeing traditional flavour combinations crafted into something new and surprising. Each meal comes with matching wine pairs so you don't have to go to the trouble of matching them yourself!

Aiden Byrne’s menus at restaurant MCR bring together the best produce from local suppliers, to create a comforting, sensory experience that excites the palate of every diner. The restaurant at Tower 12 is at the heart of the city’s flourishing food scene, an institution in its own right, it belongs to Manchester, and their customers feel as if they belong there too.

Here is an example of one of their many incredible 5 star reviews:

"Visited MCR with my husband on a weeknight and we were bowled over with every aspect of this place. We eat out a lot and are both tired of average. This was a find for us on every level. The ambiance was perfect, service was attentive without being overboard, the food obviously the highlight, 6 courses of perfection, well thought out, ridiculously tasty with good quantity. Often served by Aiden and always described in detail. At last a restaurant that lives up to it's word. Fine dining at it's very best!"

2. Globe

Coming in second place is Globe, located on Barlow Moor Road in Chorlton. After opening two years ago, the restaurant has received a raft of 5* reviews from diners obsessed with it's ever-evolving menu inspired by dishes from across the world.

The chefs at Globe believe variety is the spice of life. That’s why they've lovingly curated a worldwide menu, inspired by their travels and culinary experiences from Mexico to Japan and everywhere in between. Creating fresh, vibrant dishes also requires quality ingredients (one of the main praises they have received on TripAdvisor is the freshness and quality of the ingredients), and there's something on the menu to suit every taste. Think Bombay Bhaji Burger, Sri Lankan Vegan Curry and Korean Glazed Salmon Fillet; all served in a tapas style, served to the table as and when they're ready. All suppliers used are local to their Chorlton home, supporting the local economy and reducing their carbon footprint.

Here is an example of one of their wonderful reviews:

"A small and interesting menu and the food was cooked to perfection and served hot! We all had something different, so wont describe each dish but suffice to say we all groaned with pleasure at some point during each course. And the wine was delicious - we had the tempranillo. The staff were so nice and attentive too. I can not wait to go back and if you've not been it's a must try!!"

3. Dakota Bar & Grill

Located inside Manchester's newest luxury hotel, Dakota Bar & Grill delivers feel-good food with a fabulously fine twist. Simple, yet beautiful, dishes at this Manchester Grill restaurant showcase quality, seasonal produce at its best.

Signature, prime cut steaks are their speciality. Grass-fed, 35-day-aged beef is lightly seasoned then cooked to your liking over hot coals. Sourced from the very best British farms, they present you with the best steak in Manchester. If you don't eat steak, there's a full menu inspired by the seasons where you’ll find fabulous seafood dishes at this Manchester restaurant, from classic poached haddock to their intensely flavoured monkfish curry. To complete your unforgettable dining experience, there are a range of deliciously decadent desserts for you indulge on. Fancy staying over? Here is an example of one of their diners that just can't get enough:

"Cheerful and very helpful table staff. Food really really good - Chateaubriand and scallops excellent and perfectly cooked. If you order fritters as a side, order the bone marrow jus as well and pour it over the fritters - spectacularly good!"

4. Bar San Juan

A Tapas bar and restaurant located in Chorlton, Bar San Juan delivers more than just excellent food, it delivers an unparalleled Spanish atmosphere that will make you forget you're in rainy Manchester! This is largely due to the tiled walls and laid back ambience, it's a place to catch up with friends, enjoy some tapas and sample the finest Spanish beer and wine.

There are Tapas dishes from every region of Spain, with some creative licence, of course. You're guaranteed to find all your favourites on the menu!

In the spirit of a true tapas restaurant, Bar San Juan does not take reservations and can get extremely busy - it's number 4 on TripAdvisor for a reason! It's quieter at lunch and early evening, but like any Spanish dining experience, the night is when it really comes alive.

Here is an example of one of their many 5* reviews:

"We finally gave Bar San Juan a go last night and had genuinely the best couple of hours in a restaurant any of us can remember. We only had to wait around half an hour for a table. We had a big jug of sangria keeping us company, and part of the time was spent sat on bar-stools perusing the menu. By the time we reached the table we had decided that it was our new favourite restaurant, before we'd even seen a scrap of food. The atmosphere in here is just so good. You genuinely feel like you've been transported to a tapas bar in Spain, and the food that followed was absolutely delicious!"
